Book Recommendation: "The Idea of Galicia: History and Fantasy in Habsburg Political Culture" by Larry Woolf

What is "Galicia" and who were the "Galicians" of Austria Hungary? The short answer is that Galicia was a province of the Austro-Hungarian empire, a territory that the Habsburgs acquired from the First Partition of Poland. This territory was inhabited by Eastern Slavs, whom the Habsburgs called "Ruthenians." This territory is now split between the modern borders of Poland and Ukraine. If you would like to learn more about Galicia, we recommend this book (see link below.) While it's not exactly "light reading", it is comprehensive and compelling...and it will help you to understand Habsburg Galicia in a more meaningful way: not only as a place, but as an "idea" and a legacy.
